Before your dental appointment
How do I get an opinion before booking anything?
Send a clear photo of your smile taken in daylight to my WhatsApp, with a sentence about what bothers you. I'll look at it myself and tell you what appears achievable, roughly how many visits it would take and a likely cost range. It's free and there's no obligation to book.
What actually happens at a first consultation?
A full examination, photographs, a digital scan and X-rays where they're needed. We then talk through the options — usually there is more than one — and you leave with a written plan and costs. No treatment is carried out at that appointment unless you ask for it and it's straightforward.
Can I send X-rays from my own dentist?
Yes, and it helps. Anything taken in the last year or so is useful. If they're on a disc or a portal, a clear photograph of the screen is usually enough for a first opinion.
Will I be treated on the first visit?
For cosmetic work, normally no — and you should be wary of anyone who says otherwise. Ceramics need planning, a shade appointment and a try-in. Simple things like a filling or whitening can often be done the same day.
Am I too old for this kind of treatment?
Age itself is rarely the limiting factor. What matters is the condition of the bone, the gums and the remaining teeth. I've restored full arches for patients in their seventies and declined to place veneers on people in their twenties.
I'm nervous about the dentist. Does that matter?
It's extremely common and worth saying at the start rather than halfway through. Knowing about it changes how I plan appointments — shorter visits, more explanation before anything happens, and stopping when you need to stop.
Dental treatment costs
How much do veneers cost?
It depends on how many units, which material and whether anything underneath needs treating first. I'd rather give you a realistic range from photographs than publish a headline price that turns out not to apply to you. A firm figure follows the examination.
Why do quotes for the same treatment vary so much?
Usually because they aren't the same treatment. Differences in the material, the laboratory, the number of units and whether the underlying problems are being fixed or covered over will all move the price. Ask any clinic what's included and who makes the ceramics.
Do I get the cost in writing?
Always, before anything begins. The plan lists the options, the sequence, the number of visits and the price for each stage. You take it away and think about it.
Is treatment in Cyprus cheaper than the UK?
For complex work it generally is, though the gap is smaller than some clinics abroad suggest once flights and accommodation are counted. Price shouldn't be the only reason you travel — if the saving is small, having your dentist twenty minutes away is worth a great deal.
Cosmetic dentistry
What's the difference between a veneer and a crown?
A veneer covers the front surface of a tooth and takes very little tooth away. A crown covers the whole tooth and needs more preparation. Where a tooth is largely intact, a veneer is the more conservative choice; where it's heavily filled or root-treated, a crown is usually the honest answer.
Do veneers ruin your teeth?
They don't have to, but they aren't reversible either. Some enamel is removed, and once that's done the tooth will always need something covering it. That's exactly why the planning stage matters, and why I'll sometimes suggest whitening and bonding instead.
What is e.max, and why do you use it?
e.max is a lithium disilicate glass-ceramic. It's used for front teeth because it handles light the way enamel does — translucent at the biting edge, more opaque towards the gum. That optical behaviour is what stops a restoration looking flat.
Zirconia or e.max — which is better?
Neither. Zirconia is stronger, so it suits back teeth, long bridges and heavy bites. e.max is more lifelike, so it suits front teeth. Choosing by strength alone gets you a durable smile that looks like plastic; choosing by appearance alone gets you fractures.
How white should I go?
Whiter than your eyes read as natural and it will look false in every photograph you take. I shade against your lower arch, your skin tone and your age. If you want something brighter than I'd recommend, I'll tell you honestly how it will look.
Will people be able to tell?
That's the aim — that they notice you look well without knowing why. Getting there depends on shade, on surface texture, and on the ceramist. Flat, identical, uniformly white teeth are the giveaway, not the fact of the treatment.
What is composite bonding and how long does it last?
Tooth-coloured composite shaped directly onto the tooth in a single visit. It's conservative and repairable, which makes it a good starting point. It does pick up stain and will need refreshing over time, where ceramic wouldn't.
Does whitening damage enamel?
Professionally supervised whitening at the correct concentration doesn't damage enamel. Sensitivity during treatment is common and temporary. The real risks come from unsupervised high-strength products and from whitening over untreated decay or gum disease.
Can a gap between my front teeth be closed without veneers?
Often, yes — with composite bonding, or with orthodontics if the gap is large or the bite is contributing to it. Veneers close a gap, but they're not the only way and rarely the first thing to try.
Implants and missing teeth
What is a dental implant?
A titanium root placed into the jawbone, which is left to integrate before a crown is fitted onto it. It replaces a single tooth without involving the teeth either side, which a conventional bridge cannot do.
How long does an implant take from start to finish?
Typically three to six months from placement to the final crown, because the bone needs time to integrate with the implant. Some cases allow a temporary tooth on the day. Anyone promising a permanent result in a week is describing something else.
Am I suitable for implants?
It depends on the volume and quality of bone, the health of your gums and your general health. A 3D scan answers most of it. Where there isn't enough bone, grafting is sometimes an option and sometimes a bridge is the better plan.
What does 'guided' implant surgery mean?
The implant position is planned on a 3D scan beforehand, and a surgical guide made from that plan directs the placement on the day. It means the implant is positioned where the final tooth needs it, rather than where the bone happens to be easiest.
Does having an implant placed hurt?
The placement itself is done under local anaesthetic and most patients are surprised by how uncontroversial it is. There's usually some soreness and swelling for a few days afterwards, managed with ordinary painkillers.
Can I have a full arch replaced on implants?
Yes — a fixed bridge supported by several implants, rather than a denture. It's a significant undertaking, planned digitally and carried out in stages, and it isn't right for everyone. The examination decides it.
Can I have implants if I smoke?
You can, but smoking measurably increases the risk of failure and of problems with healing. I'd rather say that plainly before treatment than afterwards. Cutting down, or stopping around the surgery, makes a real difference.
Dental treatment in Cyprus from abroad
How many trips will I need?
Whitening or bonding can be a single visit. Ceramic work usually needs two. Implants need a healing period between placement and the final restoration, which normally means two trips a few months apart. You'll know which applies before you book flights.
What if something goes wrong once I'm home?
You'll have my WhatsApp and a written record of exactly what was done, with images, which any dentist can act on. For anything urgent, see a local dentist first and send me the details — that's safer and faster than flying back.
What languages do you speak?
Greek, English and German.
Where do patients usually stay?
The clinic is in Xylophaghou, between Larnaca and Ayia Napa, with both about twenty minutes away. Most patients base themselves in Larnaca for convenience, or Ayia Napa if they're bringing family.
Will you work with my own dentist at home?
Gladly, and I'd prefer it. If you have a dentist you trust, I'll send them records and treatment notes so your ongoing care is joined up.
Can I combine treatment with a holiday?
Within reason. The problem is when the dentistry gets compressed to fit the flights — implants need healing time and ceramics need a try-in. If a plan sounds too fast for the treatment involved, it probably is.
Dental aftercare
How long do ceramic restorations last?
Well-made ceramics bonded to healthy teeth routinely last well over ten years, and often considerably longer. What shortens that is grinding, gum disease and poor cleaning — none of which the ceramic can fix on its own.
Will I need a night guard?
If you grind or clench, yes, and I'll say so before treatment rather than after the first fracture. It's a small appliance worn at night, and it's the cheapest insurance available on expensive work.
How do I clean around implants and veneers?
Much as you clean everything else, but the margins matter more. Interdental brushes rather than floss around implants, and a regular hygienist appointment. The commonest cause of late implant problems is gum inflammation, not the implant itself.
What happens if a veneer chips?
Small chips can sometimes be polished or repaired in composite. Larger ones usually mean remaking that unit. Either way, send me a photograph first and we'll work out whether it needs an appointment or just an eye kept on it.
Nothing matches that.
